HE government has doubled its contribution to rice milling loans offered by the Rural Development Bank, top government officials said. “This year, the government has offered US$36 million [from $18 million] for rice millers to buy paddy from farmers,” said Mey Vann, boss of financial industry and representative from the Ministry of Economy and Finance during a press conference on Friday.


PHNOM PENH - Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen said Monday that his country is eyeing Chinese market for rice exports.
Delivering speech to the graduate students, Hun Sen said Cambodia and China are negotiating on the exports of rice from Cambodia to Chinese markets.


CAMBODIA’S Small and Medium Industries Association warned that domestic rice millers require US$720 million in loans this harvest season, or they risk being out-competed by foreign merchants.

ACHIEVING Cambodia’s goal of exporting one million tonnes of rice per year by 2015 will require investments of US$350 million over the next four years, according to a Ministry of Economy and Finance official.
“Cambodia currently has the capacity to produce 200,000 tonnes of rice for export, because we lack capital and high-standard rice mills,” said Ministry Secretary of State Hang Chuon Naron yesterday.

Cambodia’s rice exports see sharp rise in last 6 months

Cambodia has seen 369% rise in processed rice exports in 1-H of this year, compared to the same period last year, showed the statistics from the Ministry of Commerce’s Camcontrol Department Thursday.


CANADIA Bank Plc has begun construction on an US$8 million rice processing facility in Takeo province, aiming to process rice for export to the international market, company officials said.

Set up in the province’s Doun Keo district, the mill will be capable of processing up to 500 tonnes of paddy per day, Canadia Investment Department Manager Rien Samrith said.
NORTH Korea aims to import rice from Cambodia, as well as explore for mineral resources, officials said yesterday. High-ranking officials from Pyongyang met with their Cambodian counterparts in Phnom Penh yesterday, signing agreements on economic and trade cooperation.
The Cambodian Ministry of Commerce has indicated that milled-rice exports during the first quarter of the year were almost 50% higher than they were during the same period last year.
